How to convert ProRes to MP4

Choose a ProRes MOV file in the converter above, select an output quality and press convert. The encoding runs on your device and the finished MP4 downloads once it is done.

Three quality presets are available. Small file produces a lighter output for quick sharing. Highest quality keeps the most detail for delivery work.

Why convert ProRes to MP4

ProRes files are large and many players cannot open them. MP4 plays on phones, smart TVs, browsers and social platforms. Converting makes a copy that is easier to play and share, without touching the original file.

Supported ProRes formats

The following profiles convert correctly:

  • ProRes 422 Proxy
  • ProRes 422 LT
  • ProRes 422
  • ProRes 422 HQ
  • ProRes 4444
  • ProRes 4444 XQ

Source files are usually .mov files. The output is always an MP4 file that plays everywhere.

What happens to video quality

Converting ProRes to MP4 recompresses the video, so the MP4 is not identical to the original file. The highest quality setting keeps the result very close to the original.

The original ProRes file is never modified. Keep it if you need the original quality for editing later.

ProRes 4444 and transparency

MP4 cannot store transparency. If you convert a ProRes 4444 file with transparent areas, the transparency is lost in the MP4. It only survives in the original ProRes file or in another format made for it.

Local browser conversion and privacy

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. There is no server upload and no account. Very large files depend on the memory and performance of your device.

H.264 encoding requires browser support. On the rare browser without H.264 encoding the converter reports that it cannot continue instead of producing a broken file.
